What a Technology Roadmap Is Actually For

A useful technology roadmap does two things a backlog doesn't: it makes trade-offs explicit, and it connects technical work back to a business reason someone outside engineering would recognize.

That means naming what won't be built in a given period, and why — not just what will. It also means every major initiative should be traceable to a business outcome, not just an engineering preference.

Roadmaps built this way tend to survive contact with reality better, because they were built to be renegotiated, not just followed.
